About

Welcome to Strands of Bliss! Yumi is the voice and mouth behind Strands of Bliss, a blog dedicated solely to noodles.

Being a unique mix of Japanese, Chinese and Burmese, Yumi grew up with an appetite for all kinds of noodles. While originally from Los Angeles, she is now based in Shanghai, China. Wherever she is, noodles are without a doubt a staple meal. From restaurant reviews to discovering recipes, she hopes to share her passion for noodles and explore Asia to find the best dishes.

FAQ:

Do you eat noodles everyday?
I don’t. Well, I do eat noodles 3-5 x/week (not uncommon for living in China) and since that’s a lot of carbs I try to stay balanced eating other healthier foods.

What is your favorite noodle dish?
Tough question and I don’t have just one. Since there is such a wide variety of noodle dishes, it really depends on my mood. Amongst the top are the Xi’an style biang biang mian, mainly because I love the wide, chewy texture of the doughy noodles. I tend to eat braised beef noodle soup (红烧牛肉面) often, and I do have a weakness for ramen (don’t we all?).

What don’t you like to eat?
Pickles. Pickles. Pickles (酸菜). Anything pickled. I am semi-picky about some things like: beansprouts, olives, bananas, raisins, hard cheeses (unless melted), most Western condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, etc.)

What are your favorite noodle spots in Shanghai?
Shanghai has so much variety. Stay tuned for my city guide!

What do you do for a living?
I have multiple jobs. In addition to noodle blogging (which I do consider a passion job), I work as a voice over actor (you can learn more at yumichu.com) and freelance creative producer.

What kind of camera do you use?
I use a simple point and shoot, the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX III. It’s a great compact camera that I can throw in any purse and take everywhere. I also use a Lumix G DMC-G7K for both photos and videos. If I’ve forgotten either camera (or my purse is too small) I just rely on my handy iPhone Xs.

Can I use your photos on my website?
Yes, but kindly link back to my blog as the original source.
